Thinking of converting your bike to electric? Great decision - but not all bikes are created equal when it comes to conversion.
At E-MY-BIKE, we specialise in mid-drive motor systems that work with your existing gears. Most bikes can be converted, but some are more straightforward than others. This guide will help you understand which bikes are best suited, what to avoid, and how we can help if you're unsure.
What Makes a Bike Suitable for Conversion?
Before diving into bike types, here’s what we typically look for in a good conversion candidate:
Sturdy frame – Aluminium or steel is ideal
Standard bottom bracket – 68–73mm is perfect for mid-drive motors
Disc brakes or strong V-brakes – To handle the extra speed and weight
Standard wheel size – 26", 27.5", or 700c work best
Serviceable drivetrain – We inspect every drivetrain during conversion. If yours is worn, we can replace parts like the chain or cassette at low cost
Best Bike Types for Electric Conversion
Here are the types of bikes we most commonly (and successfully) convert:
1. Hybrid Bikes
A top choice for commuters and weekend riders
Upright and comfortable
Space for battery mounting
Good gear range for mid-drive systems
2. Hardtail Mountain Bikes
Strong, versatile, and built to handle rougher ground
Wide tyres and suspension forks
Strong frames ideal for conversions
Excellent off-road potential with mid-drive power
3. Touring and Gravel Bikes
Designed for distance and stability
Efficient geometry
Space for racks and batteries
Strong enough for heavier loads
4. City and Commuter Bikes
Simple, practical, and often very compatible
Comfortable geometry
Often come with useful features like mudguards or racks
A great option for daily travel
5. Folding Bikes (with caution)
We’ve converted a few successfully
Great for multi-modal travel
Compact, but with limited space for motors and batteries
We’ll assess frame design on a case-by-case basis
Bikes That May Need Special Attention
Some bikes present extra challenges, but don’t write them off just yet:
Full suspension mountain bikes – These can be tricky because of limited space for battery mounting, but we assess them individually and may still be able to convert them
Carbon fibre frames – We generally avoid converting carbon bikes due to drilling limitations and structural considerations
Not Sure if Your Bike Is Suitable?
Don’t worry - we offer free bike assessments. Just send us a few photos or pop by the workshop, and we’ll let you know if your bike is a good candidate for conversion.
